Penile Protrusion

Penile protrusion that lasts longer than 5-10 minutes is abnormal.  Commonly this occurs in un-neutered, young male dogs.  Usually this is associated with an erection and/or copulation; hair surrounding the penile opening becomes trapped between the penis and the sheath, preventing retraction of the penis.  The blood flow to the exposed penis becomes limited or void and if left for long periods of time, may cause tissue damage.

If your pet’s penis will not retract try the following:

  • apply a lubricating jelly to the exposed part of the penis
  • apply a cold, wet cloth to the penis
  • do not allow your pet to lick the penis
  • avoid stimulation, take away toys and isolate the pet from other pets

If the above suggestions are not working, seek veterinary attention immediately.  The longer the penis remains exposed, the higher the risk of permanent damage.
