Maggots

Maggots are the immature or larval stage of flies.  Pets are often affected by maggots during the summer season.  Flies are attracted to open wounds and urine or fecal debris left on a pet.  Commonly seen in pet’s with long fur, urine or feces will soil the fur around the back end of a pet and provide an attractive area for flies to lay their eggs.  The eggs then hatch into maggots which will feed on the soft tissue of the pet.

To prevent the occurrence of maggots, it is important for owners with pet’s that have long fur, especially those which remain outdoors for the majority of the time, to keep the fur groomed around the anal region of the pet.  Pet’s with wounds should be kept indoors as much as possible until the wound is healed.

Signs your pet may have maggots include:

  • visualization of the maggots
  • a strong, very foul odor from the pet

If you suspect your pet has maggots, seek veterinary attention immediately.  The infestation will need to be treated medically.
