Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a sign of many things. To identify the cause is very difficult unless a veterinary exam is performed, and perhaps diagnostics such as bloodwork, x-rays or a fecal analysis. If at any point there is blood present in the diarrhea, this is a more urgent matter. If the diarrhea has just started and has only occurred 1-2 times, you can administer Kaopectate to your pet to ease the diarrhea until he/she can be seen by a veterinarian. Kaopectate is a human anti-diarrheal and is available at most pharmacies. The use of Pepto Bismal is not recommended as it contains aspirin, which may be harmful to your pet. The following chart is for the use in dogs, it is unsure how effective or safe the use of Kaopectate is in cats.
The dose of Kaopectate is dependant on the weight of the animal:
| Under 25lbs | 1 teaspoon (5mls) |
| 25-50lbs | 1 tablespoon (15mls) |
| Over 50lbs | 2 tablespoons (30mls) |
The dose can be given up to 3 times daily as required for a maximum of 1-2 days. As well, you can feed your pet a bland diet of boiled hamburger/chicken and rice until firmed stools are passed. If the diarrhea is still persistent, you must see your veterinarian.
