Anorexia (not eating)

If your pet has not eaten in 24-48 hours, this is cause for concern and your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Secondary conditions due to anorexia may arise such as liver disease in cats, especially if they haven’t eaten in over 2 days, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in small breed dogs, puppies, cats and kittens.  These conditions can be avoided if treatment is sought in a timely manner.  The longer the pet goes without eating, the worse the conditions become.

You can try offering your pet a variety of foods to tempt them to eat such as warmed up canned food, dry food soaked in warm water or broth, boiled hamburger/chicken and rice, chicken broth baby food, tuna and anything else that has a strong smell.  If this is not working, or your pet is only eating small amounts, see your veterinarian.  There is usually an underlying cause of the anorexia.

When I realized my terrier mix wasn’t eating, I hand fed her hot dogs. Now she won’t eat anything. She’s drinking some, but her mouth seems dry.

Whatever was causing your dog to not want to eat should be investigated by your veterinarian. Feeding them high fat treats such as hotdogs could cause potentially serious problems or aggravate the current one. Please have her seen ASAP by your vet.
